Captain John McMurdo – Professional Biography

Captain John McMurdo has dedicated nearly three decades to public service and law
enforcement. Captain McMurdo began his career serving four years in the United States Air
Force as a member of the Security Police, where he gained foundational experience in law
enforcement, security operations, and military discipline.

Following his military service, Captain McMurdo joined the Hernando County Sheriff’s
Office, where he has served the citizens of Hernando County for over 24 years. Throughout his
career, he has held numerous assignments and leadership roles across the agency, gaining
extensive operational and administrative experience.

Captain McMurdo currently serves as the Captain of the Administrative Operations Division,
where he oversees key administrative functions that support the agency’s mission and
operational effectiveness. Prior to this role, he spent three years as the Lieutenant over
Accreditation where he led the agency’s efforts to maintain and improve professional standards
through the accreditation process.

He has significant expertise in policy compliance, accreditation standards, and
organizational assessment, and has successfully completed Commission for Florida Law
Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) mock and on-site assessments for multiple agencies,
helping departments prepare for and achieve accreditation.

Throughout his career, Captain McMurdo has gained experience in a wide range of law
enforcement functions including:

• Policy compliance and accreditation
• Training and law enforcement academy operations
• Field Training Officer (FTO) program development
• Special projects and strategic initiatives
• School Resource Officer (SRO) program
• Special operations and tactical support
• Traffic enforcement
• Court security
• Patrol operations
• SWAT
• Honor Guard
• Community policing

Captain McMurdo holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety Management and Supervision,
which complements his extensive practical experience in law enforcement leadership,
organizational development, and professional standards.

His career reflects a strong commitment to professional excellence, accreditation, officer
development, and community-focused policing.
